How Long Does a 1000-Piece Puzzle Take? (Average Times + Tips)
By the Daily Jigsaw Team · Sunday, June 28, 2026
It's the question every puzzler asks before opening the box: how long will this actually take? For a 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle, most people finish in 3 to 10 hours of total solving time — but the range is wide, and it depends on a few things you control.
The short answer
- Experienced solver, simple image: 3–5 hours
- Average solver, typical image: 5–8 hours
- Beginner or a tricky image (lots of sky, water or repetition): 8–12+ hours
- Two people together: often 30–40% faster than one
Online, it's usually quicker — pieces snap into place, nothing gets lost under the couch, and you can sort instantly. Try it for yourself with a 1000-piece puzzle.
What changes your time the most
- Image complexity. Distinct regions and lots of colour variation are fast. Large areas of one colour (clear skies, oceans) are the real time sink.
- Piece count. Time grows faster than linearly — a 500-piece puzzle is much more than half the work of 1000, and a 2000-piece is a serious weekend project.
- Method. Sorting edges and colours first turns a chaotic pile into a plan. See our 10 tips to solve puzzles faster.
- Focus and breaks. Short, regular sessions beat one exhausting marathon.
